Aircon servicing in Singapore: how often, and what to expect
In Singapore's heat and humidity, air-conditioners work hard all year — so they need servicing more often than units in temperate climates. Here's a realistic schedule, what each type of service actually includes, and how to spot a unit that needs attention now.
How often should you service your aircon?
It depends on how hard the unit works. As a rough guide for Singapore homes:
- Light use (a bedroom unit run a few hours at night): a general service every 3–4 months.
- Regular home use (living room, most days): every 3 months.
- Heavy or commercial use (on most of the day, or an office): every 1–2 months.
On top of the routine general service, most units benefit from a chemical wash roughly once a year, and a deeper chemical overhaul every few years depending on condition and age.
The types of service, explained
"Servicing" covers several different jobs at different price points. Knowing the difference stops you from over- or under-paying:
- General service — cleaning the filters, fan and cover, checking drainage and gas pressure, and wiping down the unit. This is the routine maintenance visit.
- Chemical wash — the coils and fan are cleaned in place with a chemical solution to remove built-up mould, dust and slime. Good when airflow has dropped or there's a smell.
- Chemical overhaul — the unit is partly dismantled, parts are soaked and cleaned individually, and gas is topped up. The deepest clean, for units that are struggling or long overdue.
- Gas top-up — refrigerant is added when cooling is weak because it has slowly leaked. If a unit needs topping up often, there's a leak to find, not just refill.
Signs your aircon needs servicing now
- It cools more weakly than it used to, or takes much longer to cool the room.
- Water drips from the indoor unit — usually a blocked or misaligned drainage pipe.
- A musty or sour smell when it runs — mould in the coils or fan.
- Loud rattling or grinding, or a jump in your electricity bill for the same usage.
- Ice forming on the pipes or unit — often low refrigerant or restricted airflow.
What a fair service looks like
A proper general service isn't a two-minute spray-and-go. Expect the technician to open the unit, clean the filters and fan, check the drainage runs clear, measure gas pressure, and test that it cools before leaving. If a unit is "fixed" with a gas top-up on every visit, ask them to trace the leak instead of just refilling it.
